The Hollywood Trap
We all love movies. You watch a cool action movie. The hero walks into the room and says, "Sup, homie? You ain't got no money?" You think, "Wow, this sounds amazing. I will speak like this."
So, you go to your English class. You enter the room. You look at your teacher and say, "Yo, teach! What's poppin?"
Your teacher does not think you are cool. She thinks you hit your head on the door. There is a big difference between "Street English" and real communication. When you copy slang without understanding it, you do not sound like a movie star. You sound like a confused tourist trying to be a gangster.
The Job Interview Disaster
Imagine you are at a job interview. You are wearing a nice suit. You look professional. The manager asks, "Why do you want this job?"
You answer: "I wanna make some cash, you know? I'm gonna be the best, bro."
Congratulations. You just lost the job.
Slang words like "gonna," "wanna," and "ain't" are like spicy sauce. A little bit is okay with friends. But if you put spicy sauce on a cake, it is disgusting. You must know when to be cool and when to be correct.
Walk Before You Dance
Many students try to run before they can walk. They want to use cool idioms before they know the simple Present Tense.
- Learn to say "Hello, how are you?" before you say "What's up?"
- Learn to say "I am not" before you say "I ain't."
Standard English is safe. It works everywhere. It works with the Queen, with your boss, and with the taxi driver. Slang is dangerous. If you use it wrong, people will laugh at you. Be smart. Speak clearly first, and try to be "cool" later.
