The Magic of the Dictionary
If you want to completely destroy your chances of speaking English, I highly recommend memorizing the dictionary. Start with the letter A and do not stop until you reach Z. Why have a normal conversation when you can force your brain to remember the exact definition of a rare, ancient noun? Real humans definitely use those words every day at the supermarket.
Avoid Native Speakers at All Costs
Whatever you do, never talk to people who actually speak English. They are terrible for your education. They use slang, they ignore strict grammar rules, and they speak too fast. If you listen to them, you might accidentally learn how language is actually used in the real world. Stick to your dusty textbooks from 1995. The textbook never interrupts you.
The Danger of Making Mistakes
Perfection is the only option. If you cannot form a sentence with one hundred percent grammatical accuracy, you should just stay silent. Do not open your mouth. The language police are waiting outside your door to arrest you if you use the wrong preposition. Fear is your best teacher.
The Disappointing Truth
Unfortunately, if you actually want to learn the language, you have to do the exact opposite of everything mentioned above. The people who learn the fastest are the ones who make the most embarrassing mistakes.
- Speak loudly even when you only know three words
- Listen to messy real-life conversations instead of perfect audio exercises
- Accept that you will sound foolish for the first few months
Throw the rulebook away and go talk to a human. It is terrifying, but sadly, it is the only method that actually works.
