Remember English Words with Your Home
Do you learn new English words and forget them after a few days? This is very common. Many students read a word many times, but the word does not stay in their memory. A simple method can help you remember words in a different way.
This method is called a Memory Palace. You use a place that you know very well. It can be your home, your school, or a road near your house. Then you put English words in different places in your mind.
What Is a Memory Palace?
A Memory Palace is not a real palace. It is a place in your mind. You imagine a place that you know. You walk through this place in your mind and see English words there.
For example, think about your home. You can start at the front door. Then you go to the living room, the kitchen, and your bedroom. These places are your memory stops. Each stop can help you remember one new word.
Learn Words with Pictures
Pictures are useful for memory. When you learn a new word, make a strange or funny picture in your mind. The picture can help the word stay in your memory.
Imagine a very big umbrella at your front door. It is blue and red. It opens when you say the word umbrella. When you think about your front door later, you may remember the umbrella and the English word.
You can also learn the word chair. Imagine a giant chair in your living room. The chair is dancing and saying, “Chair, chair, chair.” This picture is funny, so it is easier to remember.
Start with Five Words
Start with only five words. Do not try to learn many words on your first day. Choose words from one simple topic, such as your home.
- door
- window
- chair
- kitchen
- clean
Put each word in one place. Put door at your front door. Put window near your window. Put chair in the living room. Put kitchen in the kitchen. Then imagine someone cleaning the floor for the word clean.
Use Short Sentences
Words are important, but sentences are important too. A sentence helps you use the word when you speak or write.
For the word chair, you can say: The chair is near the sofa.
For the word clean, you can say: I clean the kitchen every day.
Say the sentence when you see the picture in your mind. This helps you remember the word and how to use it.
Review Your Memory Palace
Walk through your Memory Palace in your mind every day. Start at the same place each time. Look at the door, the window, the chair, and the kitchen. Try to say each word before you look at your notes.
You can review your words today, tomorrow, and again after a few days. If you forget a word, make the picture bigger, funnier, or louder. A clear picture can help you remember.
A Simple Way to Remember
A Memory Palace does not replace reading, listening, or speaking English. It is one helpful tool. It can make new words easier to remember.
Choose one familiar place today. Put five English words in that place. Then walk through it in your mind and say the words aloud. Small practice every day can help your English grow.
