The "Oh, Really?" Masterclass
We have all been there. You are speaking to a native speaker. Suddenly, they start rapping. They speak so fast that you only hear noises like "wzupgddaymate." Your brain stops. You want to run away. But you can't run; that would be weird.
Instead, you need the ultimate weapon of the English learner: The Strategic Nod.
When you don't understand, look at their face with deep focus. Wait for a pause. Then, gently nod your head and say one of these magic words:
- "Oh, really?" (Use this for surprises)
- "That's interesting." (Use this for boring stories)
- "Yeah, totally." (Use this when you have zero idea what is happening)
Warning: Do not use "That's great!" if they look sad. If they are crying, please do not say "Awesome!" This is the only rule you must follow.
The "Thinking Face" Trick
Sometimes, they ask you a question. You didn't hear it. You are panic-sweating. Do not say "What?" immediately. It makes you look weak. Instead, look at the sky. Rub your chin. Make a "Hmmmmm" sound.
This buys you 5 seconds of time. They think you are a philosopher thinking about a deep answer. Actually, you are just replaying the sounds in your head trying to find a verb. Usually, they will get nervous and answer the question for you. Success!
Blame the Technology
If you are on a Zoom call or a phone call, you are lucky. You have a "Get Out of Jail Free" card. If the conversation gets too difficult, just freeze.
Stop moving your face. Pretend the internet is bad. Say, "Sorry... breaking... up..." and hang up. Is it honest? No. Is it effective? Absolutely. You can text them later using Google Translate. We won't tell anyone.
It's Not a Lie, It's Survival
Language learning is messy. You will feel silly sometimes. You will agree to things you didn't understand (maybe you just agreed to buy a camel, who knows?). But that is okay. The goal is to keep the conversation alive. Eventually, you will stop faking it and actually start understanding. Until then, just keep nodding.
